Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government on Wednesday claimed that social activist Teesta Setalvad’s NGOs, which were in “poor” financial health in 2007, became cash-rich after she proposed that Gulbarg Society be converted into a ‘museum of resistance’.
Special prosecutor Ajay Choksi said this before a sessions court while opposing Teesta’s bail petitions along with four others in the Gulbarg museum funds case.
The Gulbarg Society in Ahmedabad was the scene of one of the worst massacres during the 2002 communal riots. A total 69 people were killed here on February 28, 2002. On Tuesday, Choksi had told the sessions court that Setalvad and her husband needed to be interrogated in custody regarding the funds collected for the proposed museum.
On Wednesday, continuing his argument, he said that Teesta’s two NGOs — Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) and Sabrang Trust — had witnessed a steep rise in inflow of funds after the residents agreed to sell the property to the NGOs for the construction of the museum.
The government further said by 2014 the Sabrang Trust had received over Rs 2.62 crore, and the CJP Rs 1.31 crore and Rs 4.97 crore in two accounts. Teesta’s counsel argued that the state government had levelled false allegations against her with malicious intentions.
